History
The cement plant in Berlin-Lichtenberg was founded in 1949 as a part of the state combine Rüdersdorf/Dessau.
In 1990 it was taken over by three mid-sized family owned companies and Zementwerk Berlin was founded. Since January 2004 100 per cent of the business shares are owned by Spenner Zement GmbH & Co. KG, situated in Erwitte/Westphalia. Dr. Dirk Spenner, owner-manager of Spenner Zement is leading the company in the third generation.
There were good reasons for the location in Köpenicker Chaussee in Rummelsburg: Berlin as the biggest European building lot is an important market for the construction materials industry, which means to get better access to the customers. Zementwerk Berlin is situated directly at the Spree which ensures the transport of raw materials via ship. Nowadays, 90 per cent of raw materials are supplied via waterways. This reduces the already strained traffic infrastructure of Berlin and protects the environment.
On site, the company owner could profit from the experience of the employees. They were highly motivated and engaged to take the chance of a re-start. With investments in rationalization, modernization and new buildings it was possible to build up a state-of-the-art and highly productive plant covering an area of 20,000 square meters.
The unique location at the Spree had its appropriate price: A lot of environmental specifications had to be fulfilled as it was common in industry. Huge necessaries were required to reduce dust and noise emissions in the three production units: cement mill, ready-mixed concrete and mortar.
The result of a high aesthetic standard of industrial architecture and of technique shows that industry and life can go hand in hand. Thus, the company contributes to the urban-planning development and to the social future of Lichtenberg. Zementwerk Berlin employs 80 persons and educates skilled workers in commercial-technical fields. They produce cement and cement-based materials like mortar, special binding material and ready-mixed concrete. Customers of goods in sacks and silos are builder’s merchants, stone’s merchants, building supplies stores, ready-mixed works and other markets.
